I did something life changing this past October. Not having any idea how much I would gain from this experience. And please understand – this wasn’t/isn’t about me having fun. This was supposed to be all about the children and their families. And it was all for them, but this experience was life altering for us as volunteers also.
I was able to volunteer and give four days of service for one of Idaho’s non-profit organizations that gives families of children diagnosed with cancer an opportunity to get away for a few days to be catered to and live away from the hassles of real life.
They are put up in cabins, with all meals supplied. These kids and families took the opportunity to do multiple outdoor activities, there was an arts and crafts tent, a mountain biking course, an archery course, they could even go fishing in a natural pond on the property. The facilities available there are absolutely amazing.
It was a very exciting, very demanding, also a very heart tugging weekend, but above all, it was very rewarding for everyone involved. I was very rewarded myself, with having a great family to help. Way above what I thought would be possible.
I was a volunteer host for a wonderful family with two young children. This picture was taken of me and one of the kids at camp, who asked if I’d be Sully with him. We walked around camp half the day dressed up together. It was a little warm, yes :).
It was definitely a very hard, but amazingly fun rewarding weekend.
