To say 2023 was a transformative year would be an understatement. As a culture, we saw the rise of Artificial Intelligence, continued focus on celebrity lives, and a social media boom. Yet through all this crazy, what comes to mind is the word “Authentic”. I say this because, here at Camp Rainbow Gold, we are closing out a transformative and authentically impactful year.
Reflecting on 2023
Throughout the 2023 camp season, we were able to witness countless moments of laughter, resilience, and triumph. Our community and volunteers crafted transformative camps filled with campers learning to ride a bike for the first time, figuring out how to shoot archery with only the use of one arm, a legendary food fight (yes you read that right, tables full of food provided for them to throw at each other), dancing, campfires, and so much more. The memories created this camp season will serve as a source of strength, resilience, and inspiration for the children and their families, carrying them through tough times all year.
Our “Survivors Supporting Survivors” support group for teens, continues to provide a safe space all year where shared experiences foster understanding and empathy, and these teens’ journeys are marked not only by resilience but also by the strength drawn from each other. And our commitment to the future of these extraordinary individuals extends beyond just bringing them together for connection and fun. We awarded 24 college scholarships, empowering these young survivors and their siblings to chase their dreams of continued education. Something that most families didn’t see in their future. Belief in their potential has ignited a spark of hope, proving that a cancer diagnosis is not the end but a beginning—a determination to achieve greatness.
I would be remiss if I didn’t share the incredible journey that unfolded at Hidden Paradise, our camp home. The transformation is truly extraordinary. It is bringing to life a vision we’ve dreamed of for over 16 years. It’s awe-inspiring to witness the structures come together and experience support, both in the form of generous financial contributions, donated services and supplies, and the countless hours volunteered. These efforts have played a pivotal role in making our dream a reality. We broke ground on five new cabins, a Med Shack, and an equestrian arena, and even added a new amphitheater. All of this will be ready to utilize in May 2024.
Embracing the Future
I want you to take a moment and imagine next summer with me. The campers are enjoying the simple pleasures of childhood – engaging in that spirited food fight, pedaling along the trails on a bike, and confidently taking the stage to share their favorite silly jokes around the campfire. They are gathering with their camp friends in an environment of understanding and acceptance. While having fun may not seem much different than the previous year, it will be different. What they may not be able to verbalize is what our medical team, volunteers, and staff will be celebrating as they know the changes to Hidden Paradise enhance our ability to provide a safe environment that is welcoming and supportive to all. We’ll be able to see campers no longer standing outside of a trailer to interact with the medical team. We’ll see less use of golf carts due to the cabins being in central camp and seamless and accessible entries to the buildings. Yet what’s most exciting of all, we will see the years of waiting lists for our family camps come to an end.
Let us continue this journey together. The resilience of these children, their dreams, and the stories of gratitude from families fuel our determination to persist in providing essential support. Your continued support is a lifeline for them, illuminating their path with hope and possibility. Thank you!
