Twenty years ago, I overcame a battle with ganglioneuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer I was diagnosed with at just two years old. Today, I am a survivor and an advocate for others walking a path I once traveled. My journey has been profoundly shaped by Camp Rainbow Gold, the joyful community for children diagnosed with cancer and their families. What started as a place of healing and belonging for me has grown into a lifelong passion to support others in their fight, offering hope, love, and connection.
Camp Rainbow Gold provides more than just a getaway; it’s an escape from the relentless challenges of cancer. The camp is a haven where children and families can let go of their daily struggles, allowing themselves to laugh, play, and build relationships in an environment free of judgment. As a former camper and now an active volunteer, I’ve seen firsthand how the camp’s programs empower kids, giving them a sense of control and freedom that cancer often takes away. The best part? It’s all provided at no cost to the campers or their families–a testament to the camp’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.
The essence of Camp Rainbow Gold lies in its mission to create an authentic and accepting community. Every camper, staff member, and volunteer is welcomed with open arms, fostering a sense of belonging that is hard to find elsewhere. For many children, it’s the first time they feel truly understood–surrounded by others who share similar experiences. Watching these kids embrace their individuality and form lasting bonds is nothing short of magical. As a volunteer, I’ve had the honor of helping these children discover their inner strength while enjoying the sheer joy of being a kid again.
My involvement with Camp Rainbow Gold has deepened my understanding of resilience and empathy. The experiences I’ve shared with campers–seeing their smiles despite their battles, hearing their stories of courage, and celebrating their victories–have left an indelible mark on my heart. Every moment spent at camp reaffirms my commitment to making a difference in the lives of these kids, ensuring they feel seen, valued, and loved. Being part of this community has taught me that healing extends beyond medicine; it’s about connection, support, and hope.
As someone who has been cancer-free for 20 years, I feel a deep responsibility to give back to the community that once gave me so much. Camp Rainbow Gold has allowed me to do just that. It’s a place where I can honor my journey while helping others navigate theirs. Whether it’s cheering on a camper as they tackle the ropes course or simply offering a listening ear, I am reminded of how powerful shared experiences can be. This camp has not only shaped who I am but also reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of love and community.

My life has been immeasurably enriched by this organization, and I am forever grateful for the impact it has had on me and countless others.
