Why Summer Camp?

Jul 23, 2023 | Camp Rainbow Gold, Camps

Summer camp is a rite of passage for many children and provides incredible benefits for all kids. Children with cancer should have the opportunity to attend summer camps like any other kid. Here are just a few reasons why camp is so important.

  1. Sense of Community: Children with cancer often feel isolated from their peers. Attending a summer camp with other children who are going through similar experiences can help them feel less alone. They can connect with other campers and form new friendships, which can help them build a sense of community and belonging.
  2. Opportunity to be a Kid: Many children with cancer spend a lot of time in hospitals and clinics. Attending a summer camp can give them a chance to be a kid again. They can participate in fun activities, play games, and enjoy outdoor adventures. All this can provide a welcome distraction from their medical treatment.
  3. Emotional Support: Children with cancer may experience a range of emotions, including fear, sadness, and anxiety. Attending a summer camp with trained counselors and staff can provide emotional support and guidance to help campers process their feelings and develop coping skills.
  4. Empowering Opportunities: Many summer camps offer programs to challenge the campers to learn new skills or try new things. These empowering experiences can give campers a sense of identity and improve self-confidence.
  5. Positive Impact: Attending summer camp can have a positive impact on a child’s overall well-being. Studies have shown that children who attend summer camps experience increased self-confidence, improved social skills, and reduced stress levels.

In short, attending summer camp can provide children with cancer with a much-needed break from their medical treatment. It provides emotional support and a sense of community.
